A typical American UFO sighting lasts only several
minutes - barely enough time to gather additional witnesses and crank up your
cell phone's video software. But don't go immediately inside - stick around -
that craft you could not identify might just return for that second look.
Covering the daily reports incoming at the Mutual UFO
Network (MUFON) since early January 2009, I've read thousands of
reports and corresponded with hundreds of witnesses. Some of the better sightings
where the witness is within 500 feet of the object and getting that close-up,
once-in-a-lifetime look, is very short lived.
The witness may say the observed object simply moved
away from their air space at an extremely high rate of speed like the Star Trek
hyper speed model. But many other witnesses report that the object merely
meanders away slowly and disappears simply because the witness loses sight due
to trees or the lay of the land.
While I do express caution at getting close to one of
these unknown objects, I tell witnesses to remain outside and continue to watch
the sky after a good sighting - the object might just be back.
There is a growing percentage of witness sightings
across the country where the unknown object simply remains in the area or even
returns to the exact spot where it was originally observed. In my own first UFO
sighting October of 1973, the disc-shaped object approached silently in the
dark under 45 feet - the width of the two-lane suburban street I was standing
on - and slowly moved directly overhead. But 30 minutes later, the object
returned, at a higher elevation, until it was "chased" out of the sky
by what appeared to be two military aircraft. And again, after another 30
minutes, the object was back again, but only to be "chased" a second
time by the same two jets. Amazing. Had we all simply gone inside to tell our
stories, we would never have seen the second or third act.
Something similar happened to an Illinois witness in
Canton about 7:30 p.m. on February 6, 2014, in MUFON Case 53953.
The witness was driving along a rural highway and saw
a stationary bright light and quickly assumed it was part of a cell tower.
"As I got closer I realized it was too high up to
be a cell tower and thought maybe a plane, except it wasn't moving," the
reporting witness stated. "That's when I told my wife riding in the
passenger seat to start watching it. It hovered in the same spot for 10
minutes."
The witness decided to drive closer for a better look.
"The closer I got I could see it better and it
had very bright white lights on the bottom and two large pyramids outlined in a
red light that wasn't bright like the lights on the bottom."
They decided then to pull over.
"When we got into town I pulled over to watch it
and that's when it took off. Not fast like in the movies, but slowly, then it
picked up speed somewhat, but it didn't fly fast like a jet. It flew directly
over town and off into the darkness."
End of story? In this case, the witness went back
outside five hours later.
"I seen it again 30 miles away from where I first
seen it. This time it was hovering over the river about a half a mile from the
highway I was driving down. Seeing it the second time has freaked me out
majorly. I have never believed in aliens or UFOs, so to be honest, right now
I'm a bit afraid and that has led me here."
The witness first telephoned police to report the
incident and then filed a report with MUFON.
"They said they'd had no other reports and they
wanted my name. I don't think they care. I feel alone with no one to talk to
about this and I do feel strangely emotional right now, almost to tears. I'm
not sure why I think this because I know no one is going to believe me. The
second time I seen it I was driving alone on a rural highway around midnight,
five hours after the first sighting. Someone with knowledge of what I may have
seen please do contact me. I'm a bit freaked out by this. This thing - what was
it doing and why was it here?"
Canton is the largest city in Fulton County, IL,
population 18,288. Illinois has a UFO Alert Rating of 4 with a higher than average number of recent
reports. Illinois was the 15th highest reporting state with 14 reports in
January 2014 - while California had 102 reports - the highest reporting state
in the nation.
