Case closed: Florida witness describes 'bar of soft light' at ground level
March 5, 2014
A Florida witness at Rotonda West reported watching a silent "bar of soft light" about two to three feet long move to near ground level and float between several nearby bushes, according to testimony in Case 51982 closed March 5, 2014, as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
Florida MUFON Field Investigator Robert Upson investigated.
The witness was outside observing a meteor streak across the sky about 1 a.m. on November 2, 2013 when the incident occurred. The case was filed with MUFON November 2, 2013.
"A few seconds after this, I watched a bar of soft light, two to three feet long and approximately five inches wide, descend in to the large Brazilian Pepper bushes directly across from me," the witness stated. "This light moved from bush to bush starting from my position directly across the street and moving to the north."
The witness described the light.
"The light was bright enough to illuminate an area in the bush for a second or two before moving to the next bush. It did this to about 7-10 bushes, hopping from bush to bush. It did not appear to be fire flies because the initial light was a 'bar' of light which did not appear to illuminate the bush. The illumination appeared just before the bar of light winked out. No sound was made."
Several minutes later the witness moved to the front of his house and observed the light again.
"Looked due north of my position and saw one more bar of light about 300-400 feet from my position."
Field Investigator Upson said the sighting occurred about 75 feet from the witnesses' position.
"It was a 'beautiful' bluish, bright white light, made no noise, and gave off enough light to illuminate the trees it was near," Upson stated. "Its size was under 4 feet long, 4 inches wide and had a traverse portion towards the trailing edge. The appearance was of a classic sword."
Upton interviewed the witness about his experience.
"Before it left the bush, it left something in the bush that kept the illumination on at the bush for a second as it skipped to the next bush. He notes it skipped because the object light went out and it disappeared and then reappeared at the next bush. It did this to about 7-10 bushes, hopping from bush to bush. It did not appear to be fire flies because the initial light was a 'bar' of light which did not appear to illuminate the bush. The illumination appeared just before the bar of light winked out."
Upton said the witness did try to photograph the object.
"He ran inside to get a camera and returned, maybe a minute later. He looked up the street and in front of his neighbor's house. He saw the bar of light. It then went out and that was the end of the sighting. I went to Google Earth and measured his neighbor’s house as 700 feet to the north. He remained outside for another two hours and observed nothing out of the ordinary. The next day he did go to the bushes in daylight and could not observe anything in or about the bushes that supported his sighting."
The case was closed by Upton as an Unknown.
"I believe the witnesses saw a UAV-Unknown Aerial Vehicle, an object not unlike, except for shape, of the numerous orb sighting reports we receive. The temperature was 77 degrees and it was clear. The wind was out of the south at 5 mph at 1 a.m."
